So this week was supposed to be our last week of classes on campus. I had hoped we could meet in person one more time. But we had an explosion in cases, and 200+ students in quarantine. It just wasn’t safe anymore, and many of my students wanted to go home ASAP. 1/4
We start the spring semester on campus on February 1st. Looking at the case numbers around the country and what medical professionals are saying and looking at how many people plan to celebrate the holidays as normal...I find myself terrified at what awaits us. 2/4
Do you dare ask “How was your break?!” when we return to campus? It seems like a very real possibility that every single one of us will have a student in our classroom next February who has lost someone. How do you prepare for that? We need to start thinking about that NOW. 3/4
Off the top of my head, I’m thinking about instituting rolling deadlines and contract grading. Cutting the fat out of the course. But that first day? What do we say? What resources will universities have at the ready, if any? I don’t feel up to the task. 4/4
