Hi #HouseplantHour people! I want to tell you something about #Streptocarpus. There's a lot of advice out there about keeping streps that might make looking after them sound complicated and difficult. They're not. At least in my experience. 1/6
If you want show-standard plants with masses of blooms, with continuous performance right through the flowering period, then yes, you'll need to think of soil pH, grow lights, maybe wick watering, agonising about fertilisers and a feeding schedule, flushing the compost, 2/6
frequent repotting, etc. BUT...I struggle with very fatiguing chronic illness and I enjoy my streps. I almost never repot them, I water them when I feel they need it (and often they even wilt noticeably before I'm able to water them), 3/6
I feed very infrequently (and therefore also almost never need to flush the compost), they get only natural light and light from ordinary indoor lights when they happen to be on, and I get lots of enjoyment from mine. 4/6
You won't get masses of flowers and they'll bloom on and off through the flowering period, but if you want a flowering houseplant, you will certainly find enjoyment in them without the masses of work it can seem like they need. 5/6
So if you're struggling with illness yourself, or if you're very busy with life, don't overlook these wonderful planty companions. Just don't overwater them! 6/6
