Our recent report highlights 5 KEY principles of an effective paid sick days policy:

1⃣Universal: for ALL workers with no exemptions like immigration status or workplace size

2⃣Paid: Fully paid so workers aren't financially penalized for following public health advice. 2/
3⃣Adequate: At least 7 paid sick days permanently, plus an additional 14 paid sick days during public health emergencies like the current pandemic

4⃣Permanent: Available during the pandemic AND beyond it

5⃣ Accessible: No barriers, meaning➡️prohibit sick notes;➡️no disruptions to income or unnecessary applications;➡️provide flexibility.

Flexible paid sick days can be used for the type of care needed - like going to get tested for COVID, or staying home with a sick child 4/
Best way to ensure all are protected w/paid sick days is for provinces to update their Employment Standards legislation. For federally-regulated workers, it's up to the Fed gov to update the Canada Labour Code.
