/7 Today’s @SenateJudiciary hearing on #CDA230, as predicted, focused on how social media spreads misinformation & suffers from political bias. @counteringcrime wants to point out a few highlights when the conversation turned to how tech platforms enable & amplify serious crimes
/7 Chairman @LindseyGrahamSC set the tone of the Hearing, which has bipartisan support, that social media platforms are not transparent enough in their policies nor their actions. “CDA 230 has to be re-written,” he said.
/7 @SenBlumenthal acknowledged that child predators, human traffickers and white supremacists are all amplified on social media platforms, noting that victims deserve their day in court. #pathtojustice https://www.counteringcrime.org/human-trafficking-how-social-media-fuels-modern-day-slavery
/7 Zuckerberg again touts the myth that his platform removes 99% of terrorist content. Whistleblowers have failed a claim that the removal rate is more likely around one-third. As usual, he’s giving himself an A+ for an F- record. https://www.whistleblowers.org/news/whistleblower-petition-alleges-that-facebook-is-deceiving-shareholders-and-the-public-about-terror-and-hate-speech-on-its-website/
/7 @SenSasse asks Zuckerberg and Dorsey where they see their companies in 5 years if there is no regulation. Zuckerberg says FB will be more transparent. Dorsey echoes transparency but adds they will give people more choice in how algorithms target them.
/7 We also applaud @SenJoniErnst for asking about encryption and how it will affect child sexual abuse content on their platforms. Zuckerberg answers that in the future they will focus more on identifying patterns of behavior rather than content. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/attorney-general-barr-signs-letter-facebook-us-uk-and-australian-leaders-regarding-use-end
/7 Now that there’s bipartisan support for reforming CDA 230, it’s a question of when the law gets reformed, not if. Together, we can make the Internet safer for all.
