Care for Me, an album by Saba;

Deconstructed...
Intro :

Care For Me is a concept album diving into the mental effects that the death of Saba’s cousin, Walter, had on him. It is his second studio album, and his most critically acclaimed. Saba becomes very vulnerable and shows his listeners how hard this experience was for him.
1. BUSY/SIRENS :

This double track serves as the intro track for the project. Busy was released as a single before the album’s release, and then it was paired with the second part of the song Sirens. This track starts off early with the concept of how Walter’s death affected...
Saba. The tone of the track alludes to how the rest of the album is going to sound. He starts the song off with very depressing yet true accounts of his life in which he was experiencing depression. He states that he doesn’t know the timeline of it but it did affect him.
2. BROKEN GIRLS :

Saba’s message in this track is basically in the title. He states throughout the song how he’s had trouble with women in the past and always somehow choosing the wrong ones. In the first verse he go through why he feels he gets himself on these situations...
Basically stating that he feels that he’s “broke himself” and how he acknowledges how she may be not his girl. He runs into problems that many others experience. He comes to the conclusion that he needs to fix his own problems, and not look for solutions in others.
3. LIFE :

This serves as the second single before the album’s official release. This track also has my personal favorite production on the album. This tone is more brash than the rest of the album but the message stays concurrent. Not only did he have to go through...
his cousin passing, his Uncle got out of prison and he died within just one year of his release. He also describes in the chorus how he struggles to find meaning in his own life with all of the traumatic experiences he’s been through.
4. CALLIGRAPHY :

This track dives into the deep introspection of how Saba’s music creation and writing has effected his career. He starts off the track with a very strong truth that he feels he can’t express his life experiences to his fans because he doesn’t want them to...
pity him. But obviously he’s come to open up with this piece of work. He started to realize that not only do fans not pity him for opening up, but they will come to appreciate him much more. This realization may have not been until after the album’s release though.
5. FIGHTER :

Saba goes through some altercations on this track that he’s had throughout his life. This tracks differs from the rest of the album because it dives into his physical experience and not too much of his mental until the end of the track. He states how he has had...
multiple altercations physically throughout his life that shaped his view on certain things. By the end of the track he talks about how he rebuilt his relationship with his grandpa. Also how he’s really been fighting with himself the most, “fightin myself to get out of bed”...
6. SMILE :

Saba changes up the melancholic tone of the project with this track, reminiscing on his time where he grew up in his grandparents home. The cover of the album is actually Saba sitting in his grandmother’s kitchen. He goes through some past experiences that he had...
in his childhood. Also, stating that he would like “vacation in the South”, this could be because he is trying to escape the experiences that surround his thoughts that happened where he currently stays. Overall, he wants to “smile” again and find happiness through his struggles.
7. LOGOUT :

This track not only shows a strong performance from Saba, but also from fellow Chicago native Chance The Rapper. This track outlays Saba’s viewpoint on social media and its negative effects on someone. Stating that once “you press logout, you get forgotten”...
Not only does Saba state how social media can negatively effect you, he also states that you realize “just how boring our lives a-a-are” without it. He also states that the people who feel the most insecure, are also the ones with “everything”.
8. GREY :

On this track, Saba uses the color grey to characterize the music in the industry that he feels lacks rawness. He also describes in verse 1 and 2 how he feel “the pressures of an artist”, within creation of art and how the industry perceives creators...
In verse 3, probably my personal favorite verse on the album, Saba comes in with super high energy and doesn’t stop flowing. He repeats the saying “everything is grey” multiple times in the song and at the ending.
9. PROM/KING :

Here lies easily the most powerful and meaningful song of the entire album. Also some of the best storytelling I have ever personally heard. In the first part of this double track, Saba explains his prom experience where Walter had set him up with this girl...
who’s brother almost killed him by the end of the night. Then in the second part he talks about all of the events that led up to Walter’s death. He says that this would’ve been the outro to the album but he didn’t want to end the project on a somber note.
10. HEAVEN ALL AROUND ME :

This track serves as the last song of the masterpiece that Saba and his fellow producers made. Saba wrote this track in the perspective of Walter. The statement made throughout chorus lies within the title. Walter sees “heaven all around” him...
This also alludes to earlier on in the album where he states that his grandmother taught him that you go to heaven when you die. So with this track also being the outro, the project itself is ending as well...
Conclusion :

Like I said before, Saba as well as his fellow producers, daedaePIVOT and Dauod, created a masterpiece that walked us through his life experiences good and bad. He opens up to his listeners in a way ,that is basically unheard of in this industry, with his...
intricate storytelling full of imagery and well thought out, heartfelt lyrics. I truly believe that this album with become a modern day classic within due time. And I respect what Saba did with this project even more, the more that I went into the concept.
