Well yeah but the new independent process wouldn’t have expelled him either, and thats meant to be the magic bullet that will sort all this out, so that would be worse. You have to say this is a massive problem the Sensibles have inflicted upon themselves.
This can never be resolved now, short of the eradication of everyone to the left of Starmer himself. People are just too revved up; there’s no way to reconcile their demands with reality, and you can now never ask those people to calm down.
It was crystal clear years ago that thousands of people have wound each other up into a state of total annihilating meltdown, to the point where they’re demanding actions that Labour can’t possibly deliver, that no party could deliver without ripping up the rule book.
It’s not Starmer’s fault - he inherited an unpleasable audience - but it couldn’t be more clear that people within Labour have *at very least* done nothing to disabuse aggrieved complainants of the idea that a series of party-shattering mass expulsions were imminent. And, no.
You can pin plenty of blame here on the previous leadership but seriously, the wrath now is going to fall on the Sensibles - not on the MPs who did everything they could to pour petrol on this throughout, then presumably promised catharsis - and I can’t say they don’t deserve it.
Coda: just one example here of people who know the party cannot deliver the brutal purges that some folk within it have clearly been promising, and yet is continuing to intentionally pour petrol onto the fire, just as they have done since day one.
The only way to resolve this would be to go back to 2018, ask everyone to calm down a bit, then convince certain key actors in the party, the press & some public figures to stop intentionally inflaming the situation until lots of people were melting down with pure white hot fury.
Which is to say: we were always locked on this path to exactly this calamity, the very second we decided it was a good idea to intentionally turn the heat up until everyone and everything was on fire.
