Big news day in Colorado. Soon the governor, Denver mayor and statehouse leaders are scheduled to hold a presser. We expect they'll discuss the state's COVID crisis, new benchmarks for stay-home orders and a special session of the legislature. I'll thread highlights here.
1,378 Coloradans hospitalized now with COVID, governor says.
"Most will make it out, some won't," he says. Polis says he recently attended a funeral for a friend who died of COVID.
Polis speaks of "exponential growth curve we must stop."

"Our hospitals are starting to get stressed," Polis says. "We're not at capacity, ... but this trend cannot continue."
Polis estimates: Adams County, 1 in 58 people now contagious with Colorado virus. Arapahoe, 1 in 83. Denver, 1 in 64. Statewide, 1 in 110.
(I asked the state last week for a list with these numbers for all counties and have not received a response.)

Indoor dining is temporarily closed for some counties entering the "red phase" on the state's revised COVID dial, governor says. We don't know yet which counties.
Bars closed in the red zone. Gyms can operate at 10% capacity, Polis says.
Red zone used to be the "stay home" phase. It's been adjusted and is now the second level. There's a new top level that we'll presumably hear more about at this presser.

"We must act now to save lives. We must act now to avoid a shutdown or lockdown," Polis says.
Goals of COVID dial revision and coming new restrictions for counties, Polis says: 1. prevent more drastic steps, 2. help kids get back to in-person learning ASAP, 3. "help the state step up" (with a special session)
"It's my greatest hope and informed belief that these swift and bold actions will do what we need them to do," Polis says.
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock takes the mic.
"Our average daily case rates remain extremely high, especially among young adults," he says. "Hospitalizations in the region are the highest they've ever been."
