Right now, there’s a small town in Indiana with a grocery store that has no food.

No bread, no flour, no eggs. Not even candy bars.

The only thing inside is books. They're everywhere.

Here’s the cool story of how they got there.

A Thread for book-lovers.
This is Carmel, Indiana. Population: 101,068.

The town has one main library. It’s the kind of place you’ll find across America, by the thousands – a library that you grow up with.

If you’re a nerd like me, you’ve probably spent countless hours in a place like this.
Earlier this year, they realized they needed a bigger space. So they set out an ambitious, two year plan to build a state of the art facility.

But that created another problem – Where do you put the books during construction – and how do you keep them accessible?

🤔
Enter the former Merchant Square supermarket.

At first glance, it might sound bizarre for a library to move into a supermarket, but it made perfect sense.

It could house all their books, had a big parking lot, and was optimized for pick-ups.

Did I mention it was huge?
So the signed the deal and moved in. When they got there, their team of librarians got to work organizing the different sections.

Don’t tell me librarians don’t have a sense of humor.

This was their frozen food aisle.
Here’s the candy section.

Charlie would be proud.
And here’s the Rice Cakes section.
The Deli meat section is now for audiobooks. Biographies are in the freezer. And Kids section is in the (gulp) wine section.

So far, the library says it’s been a huge success.

They’ve been able to keep costs down and use an existing space that’s already part of the community.
It makes you wonder: How many hundreds of supermarkets across America are sitting there, either empty or with massive amounts of extra space.

Imagine going to pick up your groceries – and being able to sign out a book at the same time.

Food for thought, indeed.
