I don’t think it’s inherently good or bad that gender-based “empowerment” “expression” and “authenticity” are such readily commercially available narratives for cosmetics industries. But it’s certainly umm interesting! Let’s just say that!
Narratives of gender-based “authenticity” and self-actualization are very useful for selling all manner of things! I’ve been noting this with respect to trans & nonbinary identity, but it’s also true for cis women (eg makeup, surgery) and cis men (eg fitness, pop psychology).
look at what J*rdan P*terson and his ilk are peddling for men seeking to actualize some ideal of masculinity, and tell me that this isn’t just the flipside of how cosmetic surgeons market their products to women. Cis people will buy just about anything to cure their dysphoria!
My point is not that all of this is inherently evil, but that it is all happening in plain sight, and that it’s all a product of capitalism.
“Feminization” and “masculinization” are also and primarily projects for cis people. The difference is that cis people get to do it freely.

“I want to understand why the distinction between ‘cosmetic’ and ‘necessary’ is so persuasive, and why plastic surgery seems to always be the ‘slippery slope’ at which point someone no longer qualifies as a politically deserving subject.” https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/alexverman/acial-feminization-surgery-medical-transition
