#TylerLukeCunningham plays Kai, whose sweet romance with Terry in @MichaelaCoel's acclaimed BBC drama #IMayDestroyYou is handled with a refreshing lightness of touch. Tyler also currently has a regular role as nurse Louis McGerry in #HolbyCity.
With her role as Helen, a woman dealing with a vengeful ex in these interlocking Channel 4 shows by #RussellTDavies in 2015, Bethany Black ( @BeffernieBlack) became the first trans actress to play a recurring trans role in a UK drama.
Later in 2015, Rebecca Root ( @RebeccaRoot1969) made history by taking the lead role of Judy in this BBC sitcom about a love affair across the generations, which ran for two series.
Travis Alabanza’s ( @TravisAlabanza) self-penned show #Burgerz, based on a real life act of violence they experienced, was a hit with critics and audiences alike. Their latest play, #Overflow’, is set to open at the @BushTheatre in December, featuring Reece Lyons ( @ReeceLyons_).
#SummerInLondon at @StratfordEast was the first play in mainstream British theatre with an all-trans cast. A love letter to London & a story of friendship, love & finding yourself, written & directed by award-winning filmmaker & LGBTQ activist Rikki Beadle-Blair MBE ( @RikkiBB).
There has been positive trans representation across many of the major British soaps in recent years, including regular characters @MrRileyCarter1 as Kyle Slater in #EastEnders, @AnnieWallace as Sally St. Claire in #Hollyoaks & @Ash_Palmo as Matty Barton in #Emmerdale.
Finally, for a fascinating insight into the history of trans representation on screen and why authenticity is so important we highly recommend the documentary @Disclosure_Doc on @Netflix.
