The summer before my senior year of college, I interned for a production company at Paramount studios in LA. I saw in an email blast that @jonmchu was doing a Q&A on the lot and I asked one of the other interns if he’d come with me to go see him.

When I saw the title “director” next to the last name “Chu,” I got excited and started Googling.
We went to the Q&A at this small screening room and while watching @jonmchu speak a few feet away, I realized how powerful it was to see someone of similar heritage talking about

their craft as a filmmaker.
When it ended, I felt like I needed to meet him to tell him how much it meant to see him here. I wanted to pursue film & seeing him felt like seeing a guiding star. I told the other intern this & he encouraged me to go say hi.

I was really shy. I didn’t know what to say & I didn’t want to waste his time.
The other intern gave me a quick “just do it” pep talk and I walked up to Jon with a tiny smile. I prob said something insignificant & then asked if I could take a photo with him.

Thinking about all the aspiring Asian filmmakers who have seen “Directed by Jon M. Chu” in bold letters in opening credits and seen his name in headlines announcing all the films he’s directed since.
Seeing him do it, knowing it can be done.

idr the name of that intern but I’m thankful for his push bc in retrospect, that moment was significant for me.
& I’m thankful for Asian Americans like @jonmchu who are pushing the doors open for more of us. I’m wishing him a fruitful career making all the films of his dreams
