We’re in the middle of a pandemic and constantly hear that there isn't funding for essential services like disability supports, refuge space for victims of domestic violence, communities that are flooding - it is beyond infuriating to see where and how money IS being allocated. https://twitter.com/hollycairnstd/status/1328674958726328320
A 2019 RTÉ documentary “Running for Their Lives” exposed that 16,000 greyhounds are born annually and that 5,987 of those are killed because they fail to make qualification times.

Basically, the industry kills almost 6,000 dogs annually and our government funds this.
A 2019 Red C poll found that only 16% of the Irish population agree the government should fund the industry. 66% disagree & 18% don’t know.

Attendance at greyhound tracks fell by 55% between 2008 & 2018. The combined loss for tracks between 2019 & 2022 is predicted to be €30m.
I am aware that many trainers treat their greyhounds well, but the overarching appalling standards of care and the loss-making nature of the greyhound racing industry is scandalous. Its impossible to understand why government continues to fund this and has now increased funding.
The Social Democrats, @CathMurphyTD objected to the order of business today on the grounds that under no circumstances should this go through without debate.
