If your response to “70% of Republicans don't believe this election was free and fair” is “Thanks, Fox News!”... you are wrong! It’s “Thanks, Facebook.” At the end of the day, every theory Fox amplifies is a conspiracy that gained its popularity on Facebook.
I am sick of seeing Fox being blamed for disinformation. Sean Hannity’s lies start with your aunt sharing a Q-adjacent Facebook post that may pique the interest of one of her friends. It starts with Trump seeing a Dan Bongino tweet (Bongino’s Facebook reach is jaw-dropping).
Fox certainly should be held responsible for amplifying dangerous conspiracy theories, but Facebook is the head of the snake. And until we seriously start tackling this, more people will die. https://twitter.com/travis_view/status/1328511187441520641
(Keep in mind I have no idea what to do about this. That’s the scariest and most frustrating part of this whole thing. Even our elected officials feel powerless in the face of these social media giants.)
I’ll also say: Local law enforcement could *seriously* benefit from a tech expert coming into their station to talk about the seriousness of Facebook’s fringe groups. https://twitter.com/prinniedidit/status/1328458259108392965
I’m also seeing people respond to this viral thread with “Thanks, Fox News!” Once again, these covid conspiracies run rampant where? On Facebook. https://twitter.com/jodidoering/status/1327771329555292162
I don’t think we’ll ever get people to stop using Facebook. Sure, *we* can quit Facebook to “send a message” or whatever. But your aunt who wants to see what her kids are up to won’t stop using Facebook. She wants to see her family. All we can do is clean up Facebook imo https://twitter.com/jefflembeck/status/1328737036585484290
