Yesterday a statue of Nelson was taken down in Bridgetown Barbados. Next November the Island will be a republic.

To understand the insidiousness of the displacement of Africans worldwide study Barbados' history and present. This was were the forced diaspora began.
In 1641, The Star, the first ship from UK to Ghana brought 299 Africans. There was a 20% loss of life during the middle passage, 239 Ghanaians arrived at Bridgetown.

52,000 Gold Coast Africans were taken and 44,000 made it to Barbados. The vast majority departed from Accra.
In the 1675 Barbados had its first rebellion. Only
The Akan were the majority in Barbados at the time.

They had imagined a different form of governance on the island, Kufi would be installed as the king of the Island. His installation would be in the Ashanti tradition.
The Akans who had been enslaved then demanded this change through rebellion.

This is not taught in School curriculums here. Africans demanding change from the jump and imagining new governance systems. Bussa's rebellion later in 1816 is told.

TW: Death and Mutilation

King Kufi who was described as 'an Old Gold Coast Negro'
was then burnt alive in Speightstown alongside 17 of the African leaders and 4 were beheaded

This was the first time putting Africans to death through fire was used as a tool in the Caribbean / US
This was all to teach the Black Bajans to stfu and fall in line.

However, over the years rebellions ensued, inspired by the Haitian revolution.

Barbados has often been cited as an island were people are comfortable and are without rebel spirit. This is not true, historically.
This is also not to say that the largest middle class in the Caribbean was an intentional colonial tactic to support conservatism on the island. The brutal quashing of rebellions as a warning thus creating a tiresome and sometimes assimilative social norm & stringent class system
