As you may remember, my name is Lauran and I’m a terrible creative writer.
Recently I shared my writing-from-a-perspective idea. Inspired by the wonderful @mrsbrewtandcake and @MrsSpalding, I’ve been working on dual narratives...
So where to start? A little dark and miserable, we looked at extracts from Gone Girl and discussed how two completely different characters can see the same events in parallel. We discussed (I’m a believer in only writing for purpose) how common dual narratives are in daily life..
I’ve also been working on crafting effective flashbacks. The seed planted, I decided to merge the two,
so we also looked at scenes from Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. There’s a flashback/dual narrative with Daisy Domegue’s brother. It’s perfectly crafted and again, gave ideas

Again thinking about flashbacks, we had a nose at some extracts from Matt Haig’s wonderful ‘How to Stop Time’ - using ideas they know, like Shakespeare at the Globe, meant we could talk about zeitgeist a bit (and sneak in some Macbeth revision
)

Whilst interesting, these ideas are obviously HUGE for what is ultimately 40 mins in an exam. So we stripped waaaaaay back. We were lost buttons, fallen off a coat. We split the writing into 2 (1 part you, 1 part object) and wrote together.
Finally, it was time for the students to craft their own: we’ve had watches, masks, rings, zips... all kinds of things! We’ve spent a lot of time working on paragraph and sentence types (instead of huge no paragraph/punctuation pieces)and I used a little checklis (nothing great!)
