This is incredible reporting from @stltoday and @erinheff, @joelcurrier, @kodacohen, & @Kirkman. As an urban planner, I can't move past the physical component here. Thread coming about the built environment & what that might mean here. #urbanplanninghttps://twitter.com/stltoday/status/1327619798751121408
1/ Here is the 1-mile stretch of North Grand, from Sullivan Avenue through West Florissant Avenue. The area has some natural physical assets – Fairgrounds Park, consistent sidewalks, dense streets, & some crosswalks.
2/ The area also has some regional community assets including @bgcstl, @missionstl, and a @STLpubLibrary location. These provide community services, safe spaces, and needed resources.
3/ So, what’s the problem? I see two clear #urbanplanning issues in the area.

#1. High speeds on Grand Blvd and #2. A lack of street frontage for long stretches of the street.
5/ Problem #2. Lack of street frontage. The map below shows the 1-mile stretch of North Grand. Red arrows indicate where there is no street frontage. That means, for most of the 1-mile walk, bike, or drive – you see nothing. That leaves opportunity for crime.
6/ I don’t know the solution here, but the built environment on this stretch certainly has an impact on crime. What’s needed? More economic development, investment, trees, higher density of housing, lower automobile speeds. Got any thoughts? #urbanplanning #STL
7/ This stretch also touches 3 neighborhoods - potentially an asset, but often an impediment in getting work done. Located in the City's 3rd ward, led by @BrandonFBosley. Tons of research out there on the connection b/w #urbanplanning and #crime. Posting several below.
10/ Alright, I gotta stop. Could do this all day. Would love thoughts from some #urbanplanning folks on what changes to the built environment might impact crime here. @TonyInStLouis @archcityhistory @Jacque_Ann_ @KLShack @stlrainbow @NEXTSTL
