Excited to share a long term research project of mine with you all - "Are Economics and Financial Literacy Education
Substitutes?" Our goal is to identify which class improves financial literacy best, a financial literacy course or an economics course? https://bit.ly/finedusubs
First, I would like to define the ‘our’ here. I would like to thank @DrAAlBahrani, @cincidawg, and @Finphd. They made my first co-author experience a fun and easy going experience. 2/11
Part of the motivation of this research was to add to the financial literacy policy research world. 21 states have financial literacy education mandated at the HS level. 25 have economic education mandated. 3/11
Many policy makers implement these mandates with the goal of improving financial literacy. But, which works best? 4/11
Our research finds, via data from a regional university, that the returns to fin lit edu are higher than economics courses in 5 categories, however these findings are driven mostly by observable differences between the financial literacy & economics students. (n=127) 5/11
Additionally, we find the returns to financial literacy education are higher for female students, even when controlling for observables. 6/11
The takeaways: financial literacy education and economic education improve financial literacy. Financial literacy education improved financial literacy for females greater than males. 7/11
I am looking forward to presenting this research on Sunday to the Souther Economic Association as a soon to graduate Econ Master’s student (I graduate this December!). I note that because barriers to entry in economics are often discussed. 8/11
I am fortunate to be able to do this work with open minded co-authors. I know there is a stigma around working with non-Phds, but this experience, as well as many others noted on this website show that in can be done and more researchers need to be open to the opportunity. 9/11
It has tremendously benefited me in soft skills, programming, writing, teamwork, etc. 10/11
