The neoliberal insistence on giving tax $ to corporations for investment in private enterprise instead of providing direct relief to the working class is about adhering to an ideology, not about what makes practical economic sense. 1/ https://twitter.com/FredTJoseph/status/1328703063050366976
The establishment is already poised to botch this by providing too little stimulus which will only slow the recovery. The national conversation still isn’t reflecting the urgency b/c the ruling class remains largely disconnected from the economic realities of most people. 2/2
Wow, it’s almost like it would’ve made more economic sense to have a PUBLIC HEALTH RESPONSE & put the tax $ toward things like cancelling rent & other tangibles ppl require to survive a pandemic https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.com/amp/articles/hundreds-of-companies-that-got-stimulus-aid-have-failed-11605609180
It’s important that ppl understand this is:
1) the definition of neoliberal economics
2) the guiding philosophy of the bipartisan power structure
3) what is killing us
How does it make sense to put tax $ into keeping a wedding venue open during COVID? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.com/amp/articles/hundreds-of-companies-that-got-stimulus-aid-have-failed-11605609180

This is also key to understanding why the debate over if we should cancel debt & how much shouldn’t even be a debate. If we’d put $ toward cancelling rent & mortgage instead of biz that can’t thrive during pandemic, everyone wld be better positioned rn, incl small biz owners.
You can help a small biz owner who owns a wedding venue by giving them $ to keep running the biz—which they can’t b/c of the pandemic—or you could cancel their mortgage on the property. The latter would’ve better positioned them to reopen after the shutdown.
Assuming you cancelled rent & mortgages for a wide swath of the population, everyone would be better positioned to spend money at these venues on the other side of the pandemic. Instead, we have millions of people who are now in deeper debt than they were in March 2020
What our neoliberal government chose to do instead was to throw a bunch of tax $$$ out the window in a way that
1)didn’t invest in public health
2)required people to act against health guidelines to keep the economy going
3)has left everyone in worse economic position...
1)didn’t invest in public health

...and in these circumstances folks think it’s logical to debate whether we should put *our own tax $$$* toward cancelling *our own collective debt.*
Do folks not see how batty this convo is? That it’s driven by a neoliberal philosophy that’s disconnected from the real economy?
