Let's talk about privilege in FI. I am the very definition of privilege. I am a white, heterosexual, able-bodied, middle-class, man in my mid (ok, late) thirties. My parents weren’t particularly high earners but we were certainly comfortable.
I grew up in a nice neighbourhood and went to the local grammar school where I received a very good (if somewhat one-track) education before going on to attend one of the top universities in the country.
Of course my life has not always been plain sailing but any shortcomings have been up to me and I’ve always had the power to change things.
To paraphrase Bridget Casey on @moneyaftergrad, personal responsibility, mindset, hard work and bootstrapping were all that were necessary for me. I never had to worry about poverty, discrimination or disability. I was starting from a position of strength.
Thanks to @moneyaftergrad for the inspiration to write about this - a topic that needs a lot more discussion.
