Messed up how MXTX criticals assume she is a "cis straight woman" just because she writes danmei novels.
We should talk more about the obsession antis have with knowing all the personal information from LGBT content creators.
First of all, it is not okay that the internet keeps cultivating this culture of " everyone is cishet until proven otherwise"
Homophobia and transphobia are rampant in some countries to the point you could go to jail because of that. We need to understand that being out of the+
closet is a privilege.
By being carelessly punitive about things like someone not having their pronouns in bio or not displaying their sexuality in their carrd, we are promoting the harmful belief that people who aren't out of the closet yet aren't queer enough and therefore+
they don't deserve a space in our community. This is, clearly, not the foundation for a safe, non judgmental space, which is what the LGBT community has always strived to be and sure, the discourse can start with small things like the ones I mentioned before, but the problem is+
these ideas lead to the current phenomenon in which LGBT content creators, especially women, are getting attacked if they don't share their personal info with the internet because it is assumed they're either "exploiting the LGBT community for personal gain" or "fetishizing gay+
relationships"
An example for the first case is the situation with Becky Albertalli, the author of Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda, who was practically forced by antis to come out as bi because they kept harassing her, spreading rumours about her "straightness" and asking+
others to boycott the film adaptation.
She wrote an essay in Medium about what happened and it is heartbreaking at some parts, highly recommend to give it a read https://medium.com/@rebecca.albertalli/i-know-im-late-9b31de339c62
As for the second case, we have the everlasting discourse of MXTX (and most of BL/danmei creators) taking advantage of queer men in her works and how that is inexcusable since she is a "cishet woman" so what we should do is consume her content critically, by pointing out all of
the stereotypes in her novels, dissecting all the ways in which the incense burners from MDZS are gross and, since, we have the moral ground, we can even make jokes about the rumours of MXTX going to jail without sounding incredibly racist because she, a cishet woman writing+
gay romance, is the worst thing that has ever happened to white mlm in first world countries which aren't even the main target of her novels.
In the past few days we have seen several posts and tweets going around, people being cruel towards MXTX, calling her all sorts of names+
and also, spreading misinformation about characters like novel lwj or wwx, stating they're the embodiment of harmful stereotypes for queer men in fiction and that we should feel GRATEFUL of the censored, watered down version of lwj since, apparently, not being able to show+
affection in public towards the man you love gives you more depth and makes your characterization acceptable for all audiences (and isn't this one of the most thinly veiled homophobic takes ever?)
This thread explains very well what is the problem with antis, how they're taking agency away from MXTX with their terrible takes and why it needs to stop. Please give it a read if you can https://twitter.com/luobinghee/status/1327731278314139651?s=19
This post addresses the situation with novel lwj allegedly being the embodiment of harmful stereotypes https://twitter.com/MikaAllys/status/1328082313331306497?s=19
I linked the tweets from above instead of adding screencaps of the posts because, as @coolguyyibo very helpfully pointed out yesterday, sometimes in fandom discourse we focus way too much on the bad takes instead of amplifying the voices of Chinese people who were directly hurt
by them, that means we aren't addressing the issue properly, we are straying from the main point and basically screaming into the void.

I sidetracked here, but coming back to the argument of this thread: we need to stop promoting the idea that LGBT content creators have to show
their Queer Credentials™ in order to being able to write LGBT characters in fiction.
No one is entitled to have access to all the personal information of the content creators from the media they consume. Privacy is a right and folks in the internet shouldn't be able to police+
around potentially closeted authors, without facing consequences, to the point they have to either come out of the closet to stop the hate (Becky case) or stop being active in weibo because the vitriol was that intense (MXTX)
Before you make a thread "exposing" an author for fetishizing gay relationships while being cishet, please consider if they ever said, with their own words, that they are cishet or if you're just assigning these labels because, again, "everyone is cishet until proven otherwise"
Before you tweet about how terrible and "fetishizing" it is that women want to explore mlm relationships in fiction, try to do some research about the male gaze and how we try to escape from it THROUGH fiction.
Before you make callout posts exposing BL authors and fujoshis
ask for opinions OUTSIDE of your small circle of LGBT twitter friends.
Have you ever done research of what Chinese LGBT ppl think about MXTX and her characters? Do you know what is the impact danmei has had in their lives? Have you ever considered these BL/danmei novels were the
only way some of them could figure out their own sexuality/gender identity because censorship is actually really bad and the "LGBT experience" is a western myth since we all come from different backgrounds and cultures?
Be empathetic and listen, no one owes you personal info+
and most importantly, nobody should be forced to get out of the closet just because a book they wrote became a bestseller, MXTX doesn't "deserve" to go to jail because she wrote a novel with tropes that don't cater to your personal preferences in fiction.
Another point I wanted to add to the thread: this also applies to you as a reader.
You don't have to disclosure your gender identity, sexuality, pronouns, mental illnesses and trauma to strangers online just because you enjoy certain tropes in fiction.
You don't owe anyone
explanations about why you like reading m/m while not being a mlm individual yourself, you shouldn't be afraid of getting cancelled by your own friends because of your taste in fiction.
As long as you're respectful of gay men and LGBT people in general irl, you're NOT+
being a "gross fetishist" if you enjoy danmei/BL or any kind of m/m media.
Don't listen to mean antis who hate it when others have harmless fun and if you need to talk about this with anyone, my DMs are open.
Since I see many of you liked the last points, I encourage you to check this thread on what actual mlm think fetishization is supposed to be: https://twitter.com/heliosdraws/status/1286355481796194306?s=19
