"If Iowans don't buy into this . Businesses will close, more schools will be forced to go online, & our health care system will fail."
They never mention how many people the delays have killed. There need to be consequences for these denialist governors. https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/11/17/935648739/iowa-governor-reverses-course-issues-mask-mandate-as-covid-19-cases-rise

You've got to look at this proclamation, in which it's made clear Iowa leaders knew since March the danger was real. This order is in effect until December 10? What miracle is the governor expecting? And they congratulate themselves on great leadership.

Disaster historians will archive these "better late than never" health orders from denialist governors. They're worth studying for the timelines/rationales. In this case Gov. Reynolds had every opportunity to protect Iowans but chose Trumpism instead. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/23/us/politics/iowa-kim-reynolds-face-masks.html
4. COVID-19 denial is the sibling of climate change denial. Denialist elected officials define risk toleration as "freedom"-despite evidence that freedom is being daily curtailed by the reality of injury and death, be it from floods/fires or the pandemic. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/iowa-view/2020/01/18/climate-change-kim-reynolds-cannot-handle-should-resign-iowa-governor/4499255002/
Here's the governor of South Dakota--her "better late than never letter" will be arriving soon. https://rapidcityjournal.com/news/local/gov-noem-standing-more-alone-in-her-stance-against-mask-mandates/article_9a611812-61af-5176-95ae-d253a386c3d4.html
Here's the North Dakota emergency order--another short timeline, expiring Dec. 14? These timelines are fictions spun to assert leadership, but in truth they document denialism and incompetence.

Florida has to be the most obvious case where a governor has seen his duty to Trump as the overriding imperative. What is the death calculator for this denialism? We can figure that out. We will. https://www.orlandosentinel.com/opinion/editorials/os-op-desantis-high-fives-trump-rally-florida-20201020-2rmn42hskjgxhlywdspp7psmki-story.html
For months I didn't understand the COVID denial electoral strategy--I was naive. It is the same as climate denial, gun death denial, any other form of overt anti-science politics--the denial is not lack of knowledge, it is a clear policy choice. /end https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/11/06/930897912/many-places-hard-hit-by-covid-19-leaned-more-toward-trump-in-2020-than-2016
