Next up - Accommodation and rent.

This one is a long but before we want to give a shout out to the incredible power of students to fight back against their University landlords.

✊ We send out solidarity to @rentstrikeUoM and @RentStrikeBris on their rent strikes.

Covid19 highlighted cracks in our student accommodation system.

Students coaxed into halls & student houses, only for the majority of courses to go online demonstrating again how our education system has been moulded into a business model fixed on making profit > education.

A quick 🧵 on rising rents and student accommodation that you might find useful on #NationalStudentsDay2020

⬇️

@nusuk and @Unipol conducted a fantastic survey into the cost of accommodation in 2018. Here are some of their findings and recommendations:

3/
Findings:

📈 Average weekly rent increased by 31.3% between 2011 and 2018.

📈 Annual rents have consistently risen above inflation and the total maintenance loan amount.

📈 Bed spaces provided by the commercial sector reached 50% in 2018. Up from 39% in 2012 and rising.

4/
📈 In 2011 rent accounted for 58% of the maximum financial support. In 2018 it was 73%.

There's been a huge rise in rent as every penny is squeezed from students witnessing a commercial takeover of the sector.

😡 These statistics will not come as a surprise to students who increasingly:

😴 Find themselves having to spend more energy working just to afford to study, and

😲 Taking on obscene amounts of debt just to get by.

6/
There's been a lot of notice taken to this particular area so if you want to find out a bit more here are some good articles

7/
“An investigation found that the cost of the cheapest halls at Russell Group universities jumped by an average of 41% between 2008 and 2018, despite maintenance loans rising by as little as 13%.”

"The numbers speak for themselves. According to a spokesperson from the [NUS], the average rent for a student is the equivalent of 85% of their maximum loan and grant. This is for a student from a particularly poor background, too!"

Organise a rent strike! There's some amazing action being taken by students across the country to change how students are treated.

@rentstrikeUoM and @RentStrikeBris are both currently withholding their rent until their universities met their demands.

15/
@RentStrikeBris are asking for support in writing letters to their Vice-Chancellor. Whether you're a student or a member of the public we encourage you to use one of their templates and read more about their demands ⬇️

Their demands still haven't been met but we know that the power of students can win this fight. Solidarity to all ✊
