My #BlackinDataJourney #BlackinDataWeek began with me working on a epidemiology project that drew on field data from Malawi.

I had no idea how to code, but I was drawn to the idea that I could use data to uncover stories that hadn't yet been told about Black people.

Economics followed my major change to math. There I found that there was a group of people who used data to inform solutions around anything and everything from health to education.

Economics provided a toolkit for the data that I didn't know I needed #EconTwitter.

To me, data is too powerful for it to fall into one group's hands. Data has the power to convince world leaders or change healthcare or determine a child's education.

Knowing that data has this power means that we must ensure that those using it represent the world.

#BlackinData @BlkInData means understanding the power that we possess to tell stories about our own experiences, as Black people, with data.

There exists no world that is wholly equitable where Black people have limited or no access to data and the stories data tells.

We need data equity and justice and that's why I co-founded @SadieCollective: The only non-profit focused on getting more Black women in data-driven careers, such as economics, policy, finance, and data science.

We exist to equip. We exist to empower. #BlackinDataWeek

My #BlackinDataJourney is just beginning. I am looking forward to the stories I tell through numbers. There's much work to do, and what is encouraging to me, and shown through #BlackinDataWeek, is that there is a generation of Black data scientists rising to meet the moment.
