Inspired by @StroudStory talk for @TheCCT on Arts and Crafts war memorials in the Cotswold area, I pootled down to take a closer look at the memorial in Hythe, Kent. Unveiled in 1921, it was designed by Gilbert Bayes, whose is known for the Selfridges clock: the Queen of Time. 1/
Bayes was committed to Arts and Crafts principles of public accessibility although his war memorials tend towards stylised art deco forms. The base has a bas-relief frieze of twelve servicemen of different services and ranks 2/
Above is a marble orb with ceramic inlay representing the sea. Bayes worked closely with Royal Doulton and is known for the inclusion of ceramics in his work. 3/
On the orb stands a bronze figure of winged Victory holding a representation of a medieval Cinque Ports ship. Bayes also did the Todmorden war memorial. @todbooklady Do you have any photos? 4/
