U Anang Singh Deo met me in Dharamshala a couple of years ago, glanced at my palm for about a second, and said only two lines to me - "in two years you won't recognise your life and environment" and "whatever is going, let it go". I think about those lines often now looking back.
At the time I wondered what he was talking about. Now I think he's a soothsayer.
On this path most of us just wander, but you constantly bump into people, messengers, teachers, from all corners of the world, crossing paths for just a moment to constantly reassure, redirect and pass on knowledge. Amazing journey.
when I first read apprenticed to a Himalayan master I was filled with envy that women don't get to wander the country in that way, but I realised women do. have met many female mendicants who do, but who have also taught me that wandering is not physical alone. it is metaphysical
I would have ordained as a monk in some monastery or at the very least attempted the 60-90 day vipassana courses and the 3 month yoga course in Munger this year if the pandemic hadn't interrupted. We have to constantly release our expectations and move with the current.
Study learning and progress is a constant process of undoing, not of doing. The minute you start doing, the path will make you undo it. There's a lesson in that. Release is the path.
That lesson I learned from a woman mendicant in Aamarkantak. She'd left her 7 year old son and husband & in-laws behind and lived as a sadhu on the ramghat. Taught me the meaning of brahmacharya for women for hours. These are the fascinating teachers that come our way.
You don't have to be on a spiritual path or a path of renunciation. We think one = the other. But the spiritual path is can embracing of the world, it's getting into its nitty gritty and exploring its systems in great detail, how it works. All life exploration finds its teachers.
Teachers are everywhere. In the last two years especially I haven't been left without one. As though they are passing the baton on to each other, with some knowledge of my test results only they as a community are privy to, they appear armed with lessons and curriculum.
My current course cycle ends in a month so just expecting next curriculum to come through. Just wondering what it is. Hope I can make it to a monastery by new year.
