so provincial public health is resisting the call for a mask mandate because that means a public safety order, which involves fines and citations, aka criminalization.

"it should be a crime, thats what we're saying," you say.

this is important. https://twitter.com/cbcnewsbc/status/1328513567264366593
so she's describing the harms of criminalisation and saying that these outweigh the benefits of 100% mask-wearing. if absurd! is your first reaction i am going to guess that you have not spent a night in a city park, alley, roof, or parking garage recently. you're lucky.
and thats privilege. then, she says that any tool that police get is used against the same people, who just happen to be poor and criminalized for other things but really for being poor. a mandate = public safety order = criminalization. so pls stop being cops.
i know that the position of provincial public health is that criminalization is harmful. but i was astonished and alarmed (!!!) by what dr henry said yesterday. so should you.

this is her report from may 2019, "stopping the harm"
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/health/about-bc-s-health-care-system/office-of-the-provincial-health-officer/reports-publications/special-reports/stopping-the-harm-report.pdf
saying that they don't watch to give police another tool because they know that the police will use it inappropriately and as a result such an order will cause more harm than any possible good -- what are we saying here?
what did she just say?!
did she say that policing is unaccountable and beyond government control? this isnt about masks or fines, is it? https://twitter.com/ctv_jon/status/1326916329862017025
it is remarkable to me that one arm of government is saying "we will not empower this other arm of government because the agencies it in turn empowers are racist, violent, and beyond gov't control, even though obviously masks are extremely important for everyone"
i am astonished that the provincial's top public health officer said that the current practice of public health is incompatible and in is fact undermined by current practices of public safety.

i think the public may want to think about this.
because this is extremely serious. it was serious in the beforetimes, but this is a pandemic, COVID amplifies both the seriousness and the urgency.

i went over it closely a few times, and i think there were several messages.
should people wear masks?
yes.

what about when people don't?
we have to find alternatives to public safety orders.

why?
the police do more harm than a mask order possibly could, plus they are unaccountable to the public, and even to government, it appears.

holy shit.
yeah.
ok, alternatives? what can we do? if the goal is for everyone to wear masks so that we prevent and then stop community transmission?

(this wasn't asked or answered yesterday, but its what the concern is. i think there are many answers and most will be specific to place. DIY
for vancouver i'd suggest a big outreach effort, teams of two or three, eg a street nurse and a person with experience of homelessness & a student. um no all-dude or all-white teams. multiple languages spoken among team. would receive public health training (ongoing).
and would hit the streets with clear educative info, MASKS, and resources. explain how -choosing- to wear a mask is important. [i have found explaining it that way 100% effective, one-on-one]
i think nurses are needed because *they could prescribe #SafeSupply on the spot*
yes these would be civic risk reduction teams (our goal is to STOP harm) and the way to budget for this is to defund the vpd, and its your choice too. there isnt much time.

write mayor & council, write your MLA.

its the same emergency.
and yes workplaces and buildings and indeed agencies can implement universal risk reduction strategies, and by using out/in reach, by giving people clear information and masks (whether they have one or not), they can shift the message to a positive one: https://twitter.com/dr_jdlivingston/status/1328681144125169665
https://twitter.com/kwardvancouver/status/1246054708592041986
it astonishes me that she SAID this. publicly. some media may want to ask her about defunding the police.
for public health. https://twitter.com/kwardvancouver/status/1328867250325966848
and hurry. a lot of people are out there tonight. they dont have a chance https://twitter.com/dr_jdlivingston/status/1328904339180695552
and its cheque night. yes more than a few people will die in the next 24 hrs and their deaths will not be announced, even though this is the same forever emergency for us
also some people dont follow the health messages because OH WHY DO THEY SUDDENLY CARE NOW

thats another thing to think on
and that the top public health doctor said that the positive benefit of an order would be less than the harm caused by its enforcement while A POTENTIALLY DEADLY AND HIGHLY INFECTIOUS NOVEL VIRUS IS ACTIVELY SPREADING.

she said this system, this society, is very broken.
quoting dr henry's conclusion from that report. this shredded me.
catastrophic.

you don't want this to happen. i sure dont. we have to end our emergencies. and then, things won't be the same, because we can change everything.

it was really messed up, before.
