Back to Saintbury, #Gloucestershire, for #ArtsandCrafts #Cotswolds #churches, the door closing behind us... First of all, we approach the north chapel, with its early screen by Ernest Gimson, about 1904, in all its chunky glory... #woodwork
Once in the north chapel - look up! C R Ashbee became friends with the vicar, Revd Nason, and he and his Guild of Handicraft did various restorations and work in the church ... including this ceiling, with its added roof bosses...
Also in the chapel is a memorial to Revd Nason, & to his son Philip, who died in the war. By Alec Miller, who met his wife at Saintbury, where she was looking after the numerous Nason children, and dates from the time of Nason's death in 1923. Note the van Eyck mini altarpiece...
Ashbee also redid the chancel ceiling, 1908, and, after his first daughter was born in 1911, he donated this wonderful chandelier by the Guild - sadly no longer at the church, now @courtbarnmuseum, on display (after lockdown...). Image: @CCT, who manage the church...
Back outside we go... the tower restored by Guy Dawber and Arthur Flower in 1902, and the #WWI #warmemorial by Alec Miller, 1920. And now we must say farewell until we can return another day...
