There is a quote that hangs over one of the most well-populated areas of the university: “We find the Ateneo today irrelevant... because it can do no more than service the power elite.“ These past few days has proven that, at least the student body, is anything but irrelevant.
However, with Sanggu's vote, I would like to pose a question: What course of action exactly has worked thus far in demanding that our rights be acknowledged. Has it been studying? Keeping to books, to canvas? What has all this done for us, exactly?
Let us not be idealistic when it comes to these things. We cannot sit here and do nothing but expect the outcome will be alright.
I know not all students are able to strike. However, it goes beyond the quantitative, this decision, does it not? The sanggu’s decision, I find, lacks the political will to stand for what is right. This is not a mere case of echoing the majority, after all.
I would just like to highlight how the scholar’s sector has voted yes (alonside with SOH), when they are the ones with the most to lose. I think that fact speaks for itself.
In any case, I would like to reiterate that the strike continues. Tuloy ang laban whether or not sanggu endorses this strike. Ang kasaysayan ay nililikha ng masa.
Last, I challenge Sanggu to rethink its stance. I implore you not to be on the wrong side of history.
