You can catch up with my views on #BorisJohnson’s #devolution comments on last night’s @ScotlandTonight and this morning’s #BBCGMS. But here’s a small thread in addition.
Firstly, Boris is famously loose with language. I’d be surprised if he actually thinks this BUT it doesn’t matter. The damage is done. The SNP leaflets are already being printed. And the Scottish Tories are again watching through their fingers.
There is an increasing anti-devolution view - small but determined and with some ardent support amongst commentators such as @HCH_Hill - held by those in London who are struggling to understand what’s happening to the fabric of the UK outside the Westminster bubble.
Entitled to their view but they need to understand that their position of reversing devolution and re-centralising power in London is anti-unionist, because it will lead to the domino break up of the UK over perhaps as little as a couple of decades (Scotland, then NI, then Wales)
The UK is at risk not because nationalists are pulling people towards them, but because unionists are pushing people away. The status quo is dead. There are two options: federalise or die. If the UK breaks up, the devo-sceptics can look in the mirror and know who made it happen.
