UK-listed company, @Petra_Diamonds, publishes its annual results today. But are its gemstones really ethical? Killings and brutal assaults at its #Tanzania mine tell a different story. RAID’s findings are based on 14 months of research and 118 interviews. We documented 7 deaths by security personnel (which includes Zenith Security) who shot or beat local residents entering the mine. Two were teenagers. None were carrying a weapon at the time of death.
Many of those assaulted were lucky to be left alive. The 41 assaults we documented included beatings, stabbings and shootings - with some victims left with pellets under their skin. Many suffered broken bones, lacerations and life-changing injuries.

Those injured at the Williamson Mine were taken by security personnel to the company’s hospital, where they were handcuffed to beds and/or to other detainees and denied medical treatment. Sometimes, they were further threatened at the hospital.

The Williamson Mine in #Tanzania is linked to royalty. The Queen was gifted the famous 'Williamson Pink' diamond in 1947 on her wedding, which was set in a brooch that she still often wears. Pink diamonds like these remain in high demand and are very profitable to @Petra_Diamonds
Petra Diamonds is listed on FTSE4Good for strong Environmental, Social and Governance ( #ESG) practices. With such damning testimony from local residents, it begs the question: has @FTSERussell done its research? Is its FTSE4Good Index credible?
