In Bali, there is this ceremony called “Ngaben” where people send the deceased to the “next life”. They believe that the soul must be released through the cleansing fire of a cremation in order to reincarnated into a new body.

There’s also this ceremony called Melasti, they refrain from doing non-prayer activities including cooking or working and go to the beach to cleanse their soul with water. What for? To clean the humane body and the earth from badness or bad spirits.

In the first photo, it’s during a performance called Ngurek, participants will self-harm themselves. They believe that no matter what happens, God will protect them from harm.
