Construction of the ‘Moorland’ Safe Active Street, from Innaloo to Scarborough, is nearly finished. And it has recently been in the news again. I had a ride down it today, and here are some observations from the perspective of an active transport user.
My favourite part is where they have introduced modal filtering. The street is only used by people accessing their home.

This image shows how successful this has been to create a safe street for all....
And here are the filters themselves...

Birds love low traffic neighbourhoods as well!
Some nice crossing infrastructure across busy Huntriss Rd, and a new path through Bradley Reserve.
Of course, there’s always someone who spoils the party!
In the section without modal filtering, there are works to make the road narrower.

This requires drivers traveling in opposite directions to work out who gives way to who. I think this is one of the major gripes from drivers, who then claim the works are dangerous.
There are modifications to T-Junctions, where the right of way has been changed - also leading to claims by drivers that the works have created dangerous situations.

Drivers will work it out, but I must say, I’m not sure these types of intersections are great for pedestrians.
There are a couple of legacy roundabouts on the route. Shame they couldn’t have been removed. At the least, zebra crossings would have been nice to reinforce active transport user priority.
And this is where the safe route starts/finishes at Odin Road. Looking forward to the construction of the link with the Stirling train station. Nonetheless, one of my favourite road signs. 😀
