Four years ago, I was sexually assaulted by another soldier in my organization the day I got home from AIT. I shouldered it on my own because I didn't know who to report it to while transitioning back home. Four months later I would be diagnosed with end stage cancer.
I picked and chose what to cope with, but I lived with constant threats and regular attacks against me all with the common theme of "no one will ever believe you". Today, I get to make peace with:
1) My rapist no longer being in our organization after my case was substantiated
2) I picked up a speaking position while telling my story about my experience with the reporting system in the guard for a year to SAPR victim advocates to help other survivors
3) Legislation will be introduced this session thanks to my state representative Kelly Moller who met with me in 2018 for three hours at a Caribou to hear my story and created a bill to reassign the cases of sexual harassment and assault for guardsmen to the Minnesota BCA
I think I can finally sleep a little bit better at night knowing that what I thought was a ripple in regards to my story's impact became a wave to some. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years. You're the best.
