After procrastinating for close to five years, last year in May I decided to gift myself a birthday present: A Mzinga. The statement "Kuja na madame niko na Mzinga" became a reality...😁
A THREAD on how I became a Bee keeper.
1. Bought 2kgs of Sunflower seeds (cost about 1,500 if I'm not wrong) in order to attract Bees. I wasn't sure if they'd come, but I was buzzing with excitement that I'd one day harvest honey straight outta my hive. If they didn't come, chicken would enjoy the Sunflower seeds 🤷
2. As I patiently waited for the Bees to find a way you farm, I asked my super amazing, and dare I say, single...😉 Cousin @wamuyutira who is an expert interior designer to make a Beehive for me. Shameless plug: Check out her IG (Tira Studio) She graciously agreed.
3. Back at the farm, Bees started to make a Beeline to the Sunflower plot! Within two weeks they made the beehive their home!
4. For the last 7+ years I've been farming, not a single drop of pesticide or grain of inorganic fertilizer has ever been used on the crops. Pesticides kill beneficial insects like, you guessed it, BEES! My journey to organic farming was paying off, and I'm here to see it 😁
5. I forgot to check on the progress of the hive, until I picked the smell of honey around December last year but procrastination hit again 🙄. I wasn't seeing the commercial value of one hive hence it would always skip my mind to buy a bee suit and a smoker
6. This Sunday evening I met Koech who said he harvests honey at a small fee (1k per hive) and I was like wewe kuja tuone. Dude showed up with just a torch. I asked about harvesting gear, dude laughed and said he harvests while commando!
7. 45 minutes later, behold the results. Since I had delayed harvesting, the Bees had already started eating some of it. I got 9kgs, with more to be harvested in three months time according to Koech, the Bee whisperer.
8. I licked the honey and let me tell you Maina 🤗😋. I've never tasted such raw, delicious, finger-sucking organic honey in my entire life! In Kikuyu we say "Mùrìo ùtamìyo" loosely transalted to mean sweetness that you shouldn't shit 😁
9. PS. All the honey has been booked, but I'm waiting for a lab test to ascertain it's all good for human consumption. Don't even have a brand name for the honey coz I wasn't serious about it 🙊
10. A hive can give you 15-20kgs of honey per season. Work with 2 harvest seasons a year (some get 3 or 4). With 40kgs of honey per hive per year, & a kilo retailing at between 600-700, sio pesa mbaya. I'm not yet a Bee expert but I'd definitely advise you to get BEEsy. The End
