i have to say, the last 48 hours of anti-student loan forgiveness tweets on this site have certainly influenced my thinking about it some. advocates should get opponents to freak out more to push me into the safe zone.
NEGATIVE PARTISANSHIP WORKS, BABY
more seriously, i think it very much sucks that one of the only stimulus acts biden can take unilaterally is to forgive the debt of people who already have the highest earning potential, but if that's the only hammer you have, hit the nails you can find with it.
that debt is huge, and forgiving it will have a huge and positive effect on the lives of millions of people, and it's worth doing on that justification alone. as i am not one of those people, i am happy for your gain, and hope you remember it when you are hiring people.
because if your education debt was worth forgiving, then perhaps all of these educations are a tad overvalued, and if you are in a position to hire people, perhaps you should think about all of this a little more when you're looking at resumes.
honestly, this is the root of my nervousness about this. i think forgiving this debt is great. i also think there are at least two generations of people who gave up going to college because they couldn't afford it who are going to be uncomfortable with it, even when they agree.
i literally cannot count how many jobs i know, for a fact, i was qualified for, that i did not apply for because i did not go to college, and this feeling and sentiment is significantly more widespread than people on here think it is. the number is, no exaggeration, in the 100s.
which, again, isn't a reason not to forgive! but, like, it's a jubilee that only really matters to around 20%, or less, of the population, so, like, don't break out the fucking ticker tape parade about it. do it, and move on, and don't expect everyone to get excited over it.
and, to add here, i've had mostly good jobs! i'm a pretty smart, straight white guy who has been professionally lucky, and has been willing to work all of the nights and weekends and holidays i have to in order to prove my worth.
i've got ~15 years of hands-on experience in my field, and while i've been able to advance every time i get a job, *to get the job*, i will forever be competing with people who have a couple years and a 4-year degree, so, like, from a policy standpoint, great, forgive the debt.
but from a personal standpoint, you will have to excuse me, i'm not coming to your fucking jubilee college debt payoff party. i'll send you a card, instead.
anyway, i don't mean to sound so negative. biden should do it because it's the right thing, and because he can, but if you're out there celebrating, understand why your brilliant receptionist or incomparable assistant or your older junior co-worker isn't as thrilled as you.
if there's one thing i'm sure of, in-groups protect in-groups, and, boy, the lightning-quick alignment behind student loan debt has not done anything to dissuade me from that opinion, even if i think it's the right thing to do.
