WHY SING ABOUT ME, I’M DYING OF THIRST IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS OF ALL TIME.
The 10th track off “good kid, m.A.A.d city” continues Kendrick’s story in his life in Compton. This is my favourite Kendrick track of all time besides “U.” It’s one of the best songs of all time and let me explain the genius of it with this post.
This song is split into three parts and shows us three different perspectives. The first part is form the perspective of Kendrick’s friend, Dave. He asks Kendrick to dedicate a song to him and his brother when he makes it. Dave is later killed by a rival gang member.
The second part is from the perspective of Keisha’s sister, Keisha is the prostitute that Kendrick wrote “Keisha’s Song” about. She is angry at Kendrick for telling her sister’s story and putting her sister on blast in front of the whole world. (CONTINUED...)
She explains her story and all the things she and her sister had to do to get by in Compton. They were both prostitutes but only because the system gave them no other choice. They had to get by somehow. Her voice fades away slowly to show that she had passed away from AIDS.
The first two parts of the song are based on real life events in Kendrick’s life that both happened on the same day. The last part of this song is from Kendrick’s perspective.
He is reassessing his life, his childhood, his fears. He wonders if he will ever survive the trauma he faced in his past. He wonders what would have happened if he never made it as a rapper. Would he have ended up the same? Kendrick is now suffering from survivors guilt.
Dave’s brother, Kendrick and his other homies have a conversation and they’re looking to get back at the gang that killed Dave. This is the endless cycle of violence that they are forced into by growing up in Compton.
“Dying of Thirst” shows Kendrick thirsting and wanting god to wash him with the holy water. All of his fears and guilt haven taken over him. He feels like he and his homies are evil and have sinned too much, the only way he can be saved now is by being washed with the holy water.
