Start of the Ashtyn Davis thread-
Not the best start to a thread. Davis (deep near safety) closes ground on the WR who takes the hand off on the jet sweep. Davis does a good job making sure he has outside lev but gets flat footed and never closes ground. Lets the WR run right by him for the TD. Way too passive.
Davis (top) is the deep half safety of this Tampa 2 defense. #1 WR (Hill runs) a corner-post. Davis bites way too hard on the corner as the cloud corner gains depth as there is no threat to his zone. Davis attempts to speed turn but is already left in the dust for the TD.
3rd and 11. Davis (deep safety) is in man coverage on Kelce as they "cap" him. Davis shows off his athleticism as Kelce breaks towards the sideline, cuts off/gets on top of his route. Good job staying square, would've contested Kelce if the ball was on target.
Pats run a lead/boss zone. Davis (just off left screen on edge) steps up in the run game to set the edge. Davis sees the FB coming to kick him out, Davis drops his weight, takes on the FB aggressively squeezing the run, flips the FB off his feet which takes out the RB as well.
NFL = SOFT. Davis (left edge) comes off of the ball against the TE who blocks then releases. Davis then quickly closes ground on Newton, lunges into him with his face/helmet UP delivering a big shot. 6'4/6'5 QB who is about 245 pounds....yea you need to hit him to secure the tk.
TD saving tackle from Davis (top left) here. Not much to break down minus saying that he does a good job to cut off the rb and makes sure to put his helmet across the RB laying a decent lick out of bounds.
Davis (deep 1/2 S on top), stays overtop of the TE runs the corner route. Davis is a little jumpy and overshoots in front of the TE. Leads to him loosing the TE for a second, finds him, a little jumpy again and undershoots him. TE is open for a TD but the ball is too far OS
Love the effort from Davis here (off the screen to left). Chargers run a crack toss away from Davis. Davis gives effort in pursuit but is mindful enough to come in controlled to manage any cut upfield. RB cuts upfield and Davis lays a good shot.
Davis (left edge) showing some of his versatility (big reason why he was drafted). Rushes towards the TE, tries to stab inside to freeze the feet. Doesn’t work, Davis then throws a spin (not the prettiest by any means) on the TE and finds the QB for the hit.
Davis gives up a TD here to the TE but I see it as a positive play for Davis. Great job staying balanced, square and overtop of the TE as he stems towards Davis. Davis matches the break, gets hands on but unfortunately trips (Davis’ left foot on the TE’s right). (p1)
Davis shows great recovery speed, doesn’t look back, instead catches up (love it), gets his right hand on and does a great job trying to play through the hands. TE catches the ball high and pulls away. Good play for Davis. (p2)
Davis is in man cov on the #2 up top. Heavy inside leverage but angle his hips off in case the RB runs deep, stays square, gets his shuffles in to close ground on the RB. Shows burst/acceleration as he breaks, plays the ball, nearly getting the PD but the ball is too far outside.
