A government doctrine of “personal responsibility” presumes we all have access to the same resources to support such choices. We don’t, and I’d guess that (not simply bad individual actors) is why the current approach has failed. Miserably.
Maskless indoor gatherings don’t help, but I can’t get onboard with affluent white folks telling everyone to simply “stay home.” What does that mean if you work in a factory or grocery store or distribution centre? There needs to be a structure that supports people to stay home.
That existed in some minimal ways in spring. If additional restrictions are to have any effect, they will need to occur alongside the same safety net
Just peer into any TTC bus at rush hour. Packed to the gills. People going to work. Not because they don’t have a sense of personal responsibility but because they have no choice but to do so.
