As promised, the slides and video for my talk, given to the inaugural Merton Series in Physics (yup, the physicists wanted to hear about it):
Implicit Bias: Racial Gaps and Scientific Gaps
is now available online.

Thread, 1/n ending in END with links.
I LOVE that this series was named after Merton. I am working on this paper RIGHT NOW. What is the connection?

Merton argued that skepticism was one of the core norms of science that EARNED science its credibility.

This is definitely a Mertonian Science Talk!
Slides available here.

This is my repository of @ 30 articles critical of, skeptical about, or pushing back on some of the wilder claims re: IAT/implicit bias.

My talk is the one titled:
Jussim, Critique of Implicit Bias....

@CharlesNegy, here you go (see whole thread).
Some highlights.

Slides2-7
Gaps? Real. Hard to explain.
Solution? HIDDEN BIASES SO SUPERSECRET WE DO NOT EVEN KNOW WE HAVE THEM!

Slide 13
"If financial bubbles, moral panics, and demagogic anti-racist trainings got together, their joint offspring would be
Implicit bias."
The IAT is the most common measure of implicit bias.
But no one knows what it measures.

Slides 15 & 16
IAT creator and implicit bias advocate Anthony Greenwald has defined Implicit BIas in such a manner that it is clear it is NOT measured by the IAT -- even though he has reached conclusions about implicit bias on the basis of the IAT.

Slide 20
The IAT assesses whatever the hell it measures among individuals. It is not a measure of social policies or institutional practices.
There IS evidence of individual discrimination. But there is also evidence that such discrimination is not as widespread as cracked up to be.

Slides 27-35 capture this, and this one paper encapsulates the take home finding beautifully.
One of my fav discoveries in working on this stuff is that

One is completely fine ignoring the
Ten Studies No Manager Should Ignore.
Why can you ignore them if you wish to understand racial gaps? Two reasons.

7 of the ten studies? Do not address racial discrimination.
What about the other 3? Almost no evidence of discrimination.
Slides 49 & 50 touch on the reviews showing:

Changing "implicit bias" has no effect on behavior.

"Together with the lack of evidence for diversity training, these studies do not justify the enthusiasm with which implicit prejudice reduction trainings have been received..."
So why are implicit bias trainings so popular?

1. They offer a seemingly simple answer to "why continued inequality?"

ITS THE SUPERSECRET HIDDEN BIASES!
2. The high "scientificiness" is a great rhetorical tool for activists.

"Hey, its peer reviewed! What are you? Some sort of know-nothing science denier?"
3. Incentives for Trainings?
Activists & true believers? "Let's change the world!"
Consultants? $$$$$$$$$$$$
Admins? "Look how seriously we take anti-racism, we have trainings!"
