I'm quite worried about this winter season.
From what SAR volunteers experienced this summer, there are more people than ever interested in outdoor activity.

In the winter, the length of the day, the coldness of the weather, the depth of the snow all work against you.
Less time, unforgiving conditions, snow making trail finding difficult, and travel slow.
This all works against inexperienced people heading out for their first time.

Even worse for beginners, relying on your cell phone for both navigation and emergency calls leaves people without either when the batteries fail in cold and often wet weather.
(and for those who say *my* cell phone lasts all day - I can tell you that of course they do, until you're lost. Once that phone is out and in your hand for an hour at a time you'll learn what survivorship bias is)

Winter margins of safety are thin. People who survive being lost or injured in the summer face a grimmer fate in the winter.

Even "experienced" people need to be more careful. It's not the experience level, it's the number.od people.
