For what it's worth, I think student loan forgiveness would be controversial, for obvious reasons. But almost every bit of polling suggests it would be more popular than the GOP's 2017 tax cut.
The caveat being that those polls might be missing a lot of Trumpy voters.

But, for what it's worth, here's Morning Consult from 2019. https://morningconsult.com/2019/05/08/voters-favor-elizabeth-warren-student-debt-loan-plan/
Quinnipiac from 2019 (57% support) https://poll.qu.edu/national/release-detail?ReleaseID=2617
Hill-Harris X found 58% support for free college plus mass loan forgiveness https://thehill.com/hilltv/rising/461106-majority-of-voters-support-free-college-eliminating-student-debt
Again, even if you assume these polls are off by, like, 10%, and that the issue would become more polarized and partisan the second Biden actually tried to do it...it still seems like it'd be more popular off the bat than the GOP's one big legislative achievement was.
You just have to be mindful that there will almost certainly be an intense, Fox News fueled backlash from some corners, and factor that in.
Also, standard caveat to all this: Forgiving student debt without fixing our screwed up higher education funding model is not even a remotely ideal policy option. But without a miracle in Georgia, ideal policies aren't really on the table.
