I tried writing a column and just got buried under an avalanche of "gender-critical" op-eds until the only options were to devote every word of my writing to bad faith "debates" or quit. I did the latter, at the NS, in 2015, without tweeting about being "cancelled". https://twitter.com/simonk_133/status/1328434711916646403
Especially annoying as the main reason I stuck with the NS in 2013-14, turning down a move to the Guardian, is because the NS let me write about literature, film, art, political history etc, I didn't want to focus on trans or even write about it very often
I went out of my way to be civil to these people, at considerable cost to my reputation and mental health. Sick of how disingenuous, stupid and boring this is, and harmful to trans/non-binary people. We tried so hard to improve the discourse gently and generously, and got this.
I've had one piece in the Guardian since early 2018, done on the proviso that I could directly criticise their coverage of trans issues, which took months to get through. Turned down commissions on football, comedy and film - all things I'd rather do - due to a boycott ...
On the plus side, I'm far happier these days writing for the New Socialist, Tribune and other new leftist outlets, so I guess that's a positive outcome in any case.
