/ THREAD. It's fair to say I didn't imagine, sitting in London, that our US election videos would be so heavily shared in the last 10 days. So I thought I'd put them in one place. And also answer some qs I've had about Outside Source - and how we cover other stories.
/ The first video came on the Thursday, 48 hours after election day. President Trump was claiming the election had been stolen and election observers were describing an 'abuse of office'. We tried to capture the point America had reached (in 45 seconds). https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1324451176331517953?s=20
/ That Saturday, Joe Biden was projected as the winner, Donald Trump was playing golf and, well, you probably know the rest. We attempted to record the moment in a 3'30 report. By the Tuesday morning, #FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping was trending in the UK. https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1325905080189669381?s=20
/ Through the week after the election, the President continued to allege widespread voter fraud. And there was ever-increasing scrutiny on how senior Republicans were reacting to this. We took six minutes to look at this in detail. https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1326625931419639810?s=20
/ By the end of the week, I was aware of a range of different arguments over whether the President's behaviour and the electoral system's handling of it amounted to a crisis in US democracy or in fact the avoidance of one. So we took on that issue on too https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1326995966210285569?s=20
/ It was really rewarding to see the videos being so heavily shared - and watched. I've also been asked a good few times here on twitter - why don't you cover other stories in this way? And the answer to that is we do every day - on TV and digital. Here are some examples.
/ Whatever the story, our goal on OS is always to collate all of the best information on a story and present it with direct languge & as much precision and context as possible. This guy called it 'cold, dry distillation' which made my day. (Tks BriGuy.) https://twitter.com/gbminiac/status/1324481791487430656?s=2
/ Our coverage of the Australian bushfires received a lot of attention earlier in the year. You can see all the reports in this thread. https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1216399114826584064?s=20https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1216399114826584064?s=20
/ In fact, we were very proud to be 'highly commended' for our bushfires coverage at the AIB Awards on Friday. https://twitter.com/theaibstv/status/1327270631910625280?s=20
/ We produce weekly analysis videos for the @BBCNews website which can be seen on this playlist on the @BBCNews channel on YouTube.
/ Recently we've looked at Brexit and fishing... https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1319398922696130561?s=20
/ ...the Irish border and Brexit... https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1306683290275975170
/ ...and the conflict in #Nagorno-Karabakh. https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1311757220732964864?s=20https://twitter.com/BBCRosAtkins/status/1311757220732964864?s=20
/ We also post more wide-ranging coverage of particular subjects on the @BBCNews channel on YouTube Mon-Thur. This examination of Iran's early response to COVID19 has been watched close to half a million times.
/ Our goal is to cover stories in a way that works on TV and digital (I'll let you by the judge...). And it's all produced by our brilliant and indefatigable team including @brysonandy @Harriet114 @courtbembridge @briony_sowden @nkean @DJHardman @JackKilbride1.
/ You can see Outside Source at 7pm GMT, Mon-Thur on @bbcworld & BBC News Channel in the UK. Also at 8pm GMT on @bbcworld. We post new stories onto @BBCNews YouTube Mon-Thur, and our weekly analysis video is on the @BBCNews website every Friday, plus BBC News twitter & FB.
/ It certainly feels like we've reached some new viewers in the last 2 weeks. We hope you stay with us as we continue to cover the US election story and many others. Come for #FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping, stay for the array of big global stories.... Tks for reading the thread.
