👋🏽Hello!

It's #TransAwarenessWeek2020 🏳️‍⚧️

Q. What's been the impact of #COVID19 on gender-affirming care, mental health, + economic stability for #Transgender + #NonBinary folks globally?

A. We wrote a paper on that!🧵

#TransHealth #MentalHealth @ESO_at_JHSPH @JohnsHopkinsEPI
🌍 Participants in this Internet survey hailed from 76 countries (27% from Turkey and 20% from Thailand)

⚧️ 29% were transfeminine and 5% were transmasculine, but majority (66%) were non-binary

😷 Three quarters lived in a country that had issued a stay-at-home order

2/12
We asked about access to gender-affirming resources:

💊 Hormone therapy

🏥 Aftercare for gender-affirming surgery

💈Cosmetic supplies and services (e.g., makeup, wigs, and hair removal)

☎️ Therapy and counseling

🩳 Body modifiers (e.g., binders and packers)

3/12
More than HALF (55%) of the sample said the COVID19 pandemic had limited their access to at least one of those gender-affirming resources!

38% reported that the pandemic had reduced or completely eliminated their ability to live according to their gender.

4/12
😢 Depressive symptoms were ~60% higher among individuals with reduced access to gender-affirming resources

😖 Anxiety symptoms + increases in suicidal ideation were also more common for people who had lost ≥1 gender-affirming resource (vs no losses / stable ideation)

5/12
Economically, like many others in the world right now, the transgender and nonbinary communities are suffering:

– 53% needed financial aid and hadn't received any
– 17% expected to lose their health insurance
– 40% had cut or reduced meals since the pandemic

6/12
It's not all doom and gloom though: #Transgender and #NonBinary participants also reported RESILIENCE!

☮️ 63% had sources of hope, strength, + peace

🥰 54% were intent on finding emotional support

☺️ 61% said they'd still live a happy life despite the #COVID19 pandemic

7/12
But these results point to dire needs for uplifting our #Transgender and #NonBinary communities: Policies to increase access to gender-affirming care (it's essential!), economic security, and digital interventions (e.g., telehealth) that can support #TransHealth.

So grateful to our Trans and Non-Binary working group. I love analyzing the LGBT COVID Health Disparities data that we've collected in collaboration with @HornetappBrasil + more.
