People are always surprised when I acknowledge that things like depression nests and floordrobes and boxes that haven’t been unpacked in two years exist. Don’t let social media fool you into thinking no one else lives like you. Tons of people do. 1/5
Highly curated glimpses of other people’s immaculate, well-decorated homes make us feel even more like how we live is wrong. It’s not! It’s extremely common! Most people have piles of stuff they don’t deal with and cluttered bathroom counters. No one talks about it, though. 2/5
There’s so much associated shame, but you are not the only person whose house looks like that! Far from it. And you can make it better a little at a time! It’s not failure if you don’t fix it all at once right away. Take your time. Don’t get overwhelmed. 3/5
No matter how messy your house it, it does not make you a bad person. It doesn’t make you unworthy of good things. You can make it better; it just might take a long time. And that’s not bad, either! Work at your own pace. Stop comparing your home to what’s on Instagram. 4/5
Make small changes as you’re able. Do a half-assed job. Give up after five minutes. Five minutes is great, if zero is the other option! Don’t be so hard on yourself. Messiness is not a moral failing. It’s not who you are. 5/5
