#CLST6 #RR21 I was struck by similarities between modern & ancient Roman politics, particularly how leaders present themselves

While modern leaders (especially fascistic ones) may present themselves as overly smart/fit/healthy, Roman leaders often claimed godly status https://twitter.com/FlintCLST6/status/1327689908488708096
Julius Casesar controversially put himself on coins, breaking with Roman tradition & arguably implying his own deification (1)
Similarly, Septimius Severus claimed to be the son of the deified Marcus Aurelius to support his claim for power (2)

It's one thing to say that you have traits similar to a former leader. It's another level entirely to claim to be their offspring!
In moderation, techniques similar to those that Roman leaders used can be effective at implying trustworthiness & authority

However, we should be cautious of any figure that makes claims such as being the "healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency" (3)
