I hate that this student loan convo is turning into an if and or situation when we can simply fund Public k-12 and help those who are in debt. As a Millennial this bothers me greatly because the convo completely dismisses the job markets of the last 20 years.
The fact of the matter is that Millennials did enter a horrible Job Market during the Bush era there were no high paying jobs you could get with a HS diploma, people werenât getting trades and generations prior to us told us get degrees or be doomed for life.
At 16 I couldnât get hired at McDonalds because those jobs were being âreserved for adults who needed themâ so I didnât see much of a choice. I went to school and took out loans because I wasnât given an alternative option.
Like literally lmao yall have jobs out here talking about paying folks $11 an hour but requiring masters degrees. I firmly believe we can help everyone especially since theyâre CANCELLING tax debts for the rich.
Like it bothers me as a Black woman because I do remember clawing my way through predominantly Black public school and working my ass off just to end up behind my Yt peers at HSâs in neighboring towns.
They got ACT prep and we got metal detectors. Many of us didnât end up in college because we had school counselors telling us we wouldnât be able to handle college work and we should just focus on not dropping out. Thats how they talk to Black kids in HS
I never had that convo with teachers because they knew what time it was but college for Black kids isnt the same as college for White Kids which is why this rejection from older Black folks baffles me. Many of us were told we wouldnât be shit in college. We did it anyway.
I think about all the full rides my yt peers ended up with just off the strength of a test score. I struggled HARD with the ACT and our ACT prep class was like a free class nobody gave a fuck if we would make it after graduation.
The entire staff counted us out from the time we walked through those doors. They only cared about over policing our schools. Resource officers carried loaded guns. We were told many of us would end up in jail by Black staff.
So yes lets push more funding into public Pre-k-12 but letâs also address the systemic disparities that create the desperation around taking out loans. For MANY of us college kept us out the streets and out of prison. We deserve relief. All of us do.
And let it be known, my high school was in one of the HIGHEST earning Black districts in the C O U N T R Y and they still are discussing closing schools
