I think when discussing the possibility of Biden canceling student debt by executive order we need to be absolutely crystal clear about what a pathetic, half assed measure this is and who it helps.

Yes, it will help people. Yes, student debt is a problem.
Here is the thing though: only 30% of Americans carry college debt. If they completed college, they're already set up to be among the more affluent, as holding a bachelor's means that on average people earn 74% more than those with just a high school diploma.
So yeah ok canceling $50k of student debt for everyone that holds it will help some people but it's going to help people who largely already hold degrees and largely are already on track to earn more.
It will do fuck all to make education more accessible. It will not help people who don't have a degree to earn a living wage. It is a plan to assist downwardly mobile members of the middle class. And that's OK -- they deserve help.
But why the fuck are we not also discussing what can be done about medical debt?
Why are we not discussing what can be done to give everyone who wants to go to college $50k to spend on tuition and fees?
I want that $50k forgiven for people. But it's not going to solve the fundamental inequity of access to education in this country. It is not going to help the 67% of people who do not have a college degree get a living wage.
We need to be really goddamned clear about how very limited this is *and keep fucking fighting*.
