can't speak for labels, but some practical advice for newer artists looking to navigate the press side (b/c all this stuff can be opaque & understandably frustrating) --

1. announce your album/single/whatev a few weeks in advance if you can! on social media or by (cont'd) https://twitter.com/dustinjswatson/status/1328374578024943617
contacting writers directly. Many post emails/contact info in bios. I check my DMs. Giving folks advance notice helps blogs/publications plan editorial calendars, gives writers time to pitch, etc. Most DIY-adjacent bloggers are writing for free & might be juggling another job!
2. Give a little backstory! Trying to write about an album w/o any info abt where it's coming from leaves writers to just string a bunch of adjectives together or worse and the cringe potential is HIGH. A quick artist bio + blurb about the idea behind the album/thing help a lot
3. Be direct! "Just getting this on your radar in case you're interested" is cool and helpful. If you're looking for something specific, ask! No need for follow/unfollows or flattery. (pls pls pls don't make it weird)
Bonus: Lyrics! Not necessarily the norm, but a big help when they're posted on your Bandcamp, in an emailed PDF, etc. Lyrics are usually the thing that get me hooked on a song & guessing at what someone is saying is just 🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️🕳️
