Why I make my bed every morning, and why you don't have to:

A thread on #ADHD and why individual manifestation matters: /1
ADHD disrupts our ability to engage. One powerful way I've found to help manage the gap between awareness and action is to simplify, reduce, or eliminate the tasks that don't serve me. This is the core of my "Let It Be Easy" philosophy. /2
A second and equally powerful way I manage that gap is to notice when the consequences of a simple task left undone become far greater than the effort the task itself would have taken. For me, making my bed each morning falls into this category. Let's examine why: /3
Reason #1: I am hypersensitive in the visual modality. For me, visual clutter quite literally translates into mental clutter. Not only is my made bed less visually noisy, it also sets the "tone" for the room and motivates me to keep it visually quiet. /4
Reason #2: I find it highly satisfying to climb into my made bed each evening which makes the awareness/action gap of going to bed much easier to bridge. /5
Reason #3: I am a fitful sleeper. If I go a few days without making my bed, the sheet and blanket situation becomes quite disastrous, which means the task of making my bed goes from a few moments to several minutes of detangling and retucking. /6
In doing my own work to better understand my ADHD, I've discovered that this is what is true for me and my ADHD brain.

It is worth it to me to devout activation energy each morning to make my bed, that doesn't mean the same is true for you. /7
For example, I have a client who devotes a lot of activation energy to having a variety of fresh, healthy meals each week.

Doing his own awareness work showed him that while he does not love cooking, he values the benefits the results give him enough prioritize here. /8
Meanwhile, I am perfectly happy eating the same rotation of easy to prepare meals and I often make enough of one thing to provide leftovers for the entire week.

The activation energy I save here goes towards what matters most to me. /9
Us ADHD people often should all over ourselves in the name of "adulting".

There is no right way to adult, there is only what works for us as adults.

If making the bed doesn't serve you, leave it unmade. Save your activation energy for the things that *do* serve you. 10/10
